Police are investigating after a man in his 80s was killed in a rollover crash on Highway 22 near Priddis on Friday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the crash on the highway, near Coalmine Road, at about 10:30 a.m.

Police say a sedan was travelling westbound on the highway when it left the road and rolled into a ditch on the north side, trapping both occupants.

An 85-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and an 87-year-old woman was extracted from the wreckage and taken by ground ambulance to Foothills Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Emergency crews were also called to a crash involving two dump trucks on Rural Road 11, just north of Highway 566, at about 10:45 a.m.

Three patients were transported from the scene; two in serious condition and the third in stable condition.

RCMP are warning drivers to take caution in the poor conditions cause by the bad weather and avoid going out at all if they can.

Police remind drivers to:

  • Reduce your speed and wear your seatbelt
  • Turn on your vehicle's headlights/taillights to increase your vehicle’s visibility
  • Increase the distance between your vehicle and others on the road to provide greater distance for stopping and more time to react to any hazardous situations
  • Ensure you have a full tank of gas before venturing out as there could be delays due to accidents or stalled vehicles and the last thing you would want is to run out of gas before reaching your destination
  • Obey the directions of Police and Emergency personnel you may encounter on the road
  • Pack some warm clothes, such as gloves/mittens, hats, toques and blankets in the car in the event that you have to pull over for a while or become stuck; at least you can stay warm

Authorities say while winter isn’t here just yet, snowy and icy conditions are developing on many highways in southern Alberta and they want everyone to drive carefully.
