Crews are on scene cleaning up in a remote area of northern Alberta, the site of one of the biggest pipeline leaks in North American history.

The operator, Apache Canada, says that more than 9.5M litres of water possessing toxic elements spilled about two weeks ago, affecting about 42 hectares of land near Zama City.

The company says it stopped the leak when it was discovered, but have now just realized the size and scope of the accident.

Zama City is located about 100 kilometres south of the boundary with the Northwest Territories.
