A crosswalk near the intersection of Centre Street and Stephen Avenue (8 Ave) South will soon resemble a rainbow following a successful crowdfunding initiative.
Earlier this week, Pride Calgary officials said the painting of a crosswalk for the 2016 event was in jeopardy due to a lack of funds. Organizers created a GoFundMe page and amassed their target goal of $4,000 in mere days,
“We’re really excited that the community has donated and in so quick a fashion,” said Craig Sklenar of Pride Calgary. “Everything’s good-to-go on the implementation on the week of Pride.”
Calgary realtor Justin Havre donated more than $1,800 to the cause.
"It's great for us as Calgarians," said Havre of his support for Pride Calgary. "I'm happy to be able to contribute my share."
Sklenar says the rainbow crosswalk will deliver an important message.
“We think it’s a great day-to-day reminder of the diversity that lives here in Calgary and it allows all Calgarians to celebrate with us throughout the year.”
Calgary Pride festivities are scheduled to begin on August 26 with the Pride parade slated for Sunday, September 4.
