Police are investigating the city's latest homicide. Investigators confirm a man found slumped over in a car shortly after crashing through a fence was shot.

It happened in the beltline Monday morning.

Police responded to several calls of gunshots being fired along 12th Street and 13th Avenue southwest around 11:30 a.m.

Witnesses say a car seemed to be the target of the shots and that it drove very fast out of a back alley before crashing into a fence.

By the time paramedics arrived, the car's driver was dead.

At first police wouldn't confirm whether or not he was killed by gunfire. Inspector Guy Slater says it's fortunate no one else was hurt.

"This continues to concern the Calgary Police Service to considerable levels. The location where this occurred is right behind a strip mall which has a coffee shop and convenience store and is a highly congested area of town with lots of foot and vehicle traffic."

The name of the victim will not be released. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area Monday morning to contact them.

They're looking for witnesses. They are also looking for a man they call a person of interest. He is described as a dark skinned male in his early to mid twenties.

Investigators are also looking for a second male who may know more about what happened.

The Calgary Police Service gang unit is investigating.
