Police investigating suspicious death in Mckenzie Towne
The Calgary police homicide unit is investigating the suspicious death of a man in the southeast community of Mckenzie Towne.
Officers were called to the 300 block of Prestwick Terrace S.E. around 8:25 a.m. Monday for reports of an assault.
When they arrived, they found one man dead.
The suspect had fled the scene but was located a short time later at South Trail Crossing at the Stacked Pancake and Breakfast House.
Dan Kurtana, who meets with work colleagues for breakfast every week at the restaurant, says the suspect walked in, sat at a table next to his and ordered a coffee.
"A little shocking for a Monday morning breakfast meeting," he said.
He says police ushered everyone out of the restaurant for an abundance of caution.
"We were all walking out. He just bolted off to the one side and the officers came right after him," Kurtana said.
"He was quiet. He really seemed out of sorts – looked like he just crawled out of bed, his hair was sort of messy."
Police are not looking for any other suspects.
Investigators believe the attack was targeted.
"It appears the victim and the suspect were known to each other and there's no further threat to public safety," Duty Insp. Scott Campbell with the Calgary Police Service said Monday.
An autopsy on the victim will be scheduled at a later date to confirm the manner and cause of death.
Paulo Melo, who lives in the area, says he was shocked to see the police on his street when he woke up on Monday.
"A little too close for comfort," he said.
He says he's lived in the area for more than 20 years and does not remember an incident like this taking place.
Blake Gorner, who also lives nearby, says the community is a quiet one.
"It sucks that someone had to die," he said.
Lyle Kaszas is staying with his parents and says police were on the scene quickly.
"I saw the K-9 cops come in with sirens, his lights on and flew through here like 100 miles an hour and then rolled in here," he said.
"This isn't the neighbourhood. I mean, it's pretty surprising."
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234.
Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or calgarycrimestoppers.org.
