Calgary police have released the identity of a man who was murdered at a northeast bar on the weekend.

Police were called to the Sunset & Vine Pub and Eatery, at 2220 68 St. N.E., at about 1:45 a.m., Saturday, March 17, 2012, to reports of an altercation inside the bar.

When they arrived they found a man suffering from apparent stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses say that the victim was standing inside the bar when he became involved in an altercation with another male. They say the victim was stabbed and the offender quickly left the bar.

On Tuesday, police confirmed the identity of the victim as 23-year-old Mario Alberto Gomez and say he died of stab wounds.

Investigators say that they do not believe this was a random attack and have not established a motive.

"It's hard to determine right now when the offender arrived at the location, but there's no doubt what his intent was once he went to engage with the victim," said CPS S/Sgt Grant Miller.

Police interviewed about 25 witnesses and say all were cooperative. They have released a description of a suspect.

He is described as:

  • Caucasian
  • More than 183 cm or 6' tall
  • Short hair
  • Approximately 20 to 25 years-of-age

After reviewing all the relevant information, police can confirm that the suspect was not wearing a scarf, as was previously reported.

Police do not believe this was a random attack, but have yet to establish a motive.
