Officials are being asked to raise the speed limit in Alberta to 120 km/h.

Freddy Bueno from Fort McMurray started an onine petition saying he speaks for most Albertans when he says the speed limit on provincial highways are entirely too low.

With thousands of people commuting long distances for work, he believes increasing the speed limit to 120 will significantly shorten the duration of the commute and allow traffic to move freely.

Bueno mentions that studies done in other provinces and in parts of the United States show when speed limits are increased, the amount of collisions go down significantly.

He also says he believes speed alone is not a major contributor to motor vehicle accidents, but that the main cause is driver negligence and/or driver error.

According to the Government of Alberta Ministry of Transportation website, stats show 345 people were killed, 18,220 people were injured, and there were 136,595 collisions in 2012.  The website says 88% of total collisions involved at least one driver who committed a driving error.

As for speeding, the stats show one in three drivers involved in fatal collisions and one in ten drivers in injury crashes were driving at an unsafe speed.

The online petition was started two days ago and already has nearly 6,000 supporters.
