With Highway 1 closed to all travel due to severe road conditions, many drivers have been left stranded in communities east of Calgary.

As a result, many recreation centres in Chestermere, Gleichen, and Strathmore have opened up to help them out.

One site has been set up at the Strathmore Civic Centre, located at 120 Brent Blvd.

Drivers can take Highway 817 north from Highway 1 and then turn right on Brent Blvd. to get there.

Motorists are being fed and housed there until the Highway is reopened. Officials say that all stranded drivers will be well taken care of.

Highway 1 east to Highway 36, just outside Brooks has been closed to all traffic since shortly before noon on Monday.

The Town of Strathmore says motels in the area are booked solid.
