Excavation trucks and equipment are already at the site and construction could begin as early as this week on the controversial airport tunnel.
A deal was struck between the city and the Calgary Airport Authority a few weeks ago and neither are wasting any time getting the project started.
Construction on the new runway is already underway and is part of the airport authority's Runway Development Project.
The new runway is 14,000 feet long and 200 feet wide and is expected to be in service by May 2014.
The airport tunnel will extend Airport Trail from Barlow Trail to 36 St. N.E. under the runway providing an east-west thoroughfare for vehicles.
The tunnel is also expected to allow future LRT access to the airport terminal
Construction on the tunnel will be done in three stages.
The tunnel is scheduled to be open to traffic in 2014 and will cost $414 million.
