Alberta Health and Wellness and Alberta Infrastructure toured members of the media around the South Health Campus to provide a construction update on Friday.

The opening of the facility will be phased-in and that is scheduled to start in the spring of 2012.

Services at the health centre will include women's health, special care nursery, emergency, surgery and mental health.

"The South Health Campus is more than a hospital. It will provide services to support promoting wellness and treating illness and injury." said Dr. Chris Eagle, AHS Acting President and CEO. "The campus was designed from the ground up to provide state of the art innovation and technology for delivering care to patients and families."

Physicians and specialists will work together to facilitate diagnostics and treatment and this team approach should cut down lengthy wait times in the ER.

The facility will employ 2,400 staff members and 183 physicians to support 298 beds, 200,000 outpatient visits, and 2,500 births per year.

The site should be fully open by early 2013.
