Members of the Siksika First Nation and residents of Gleichen marched together as part of the town’s Remembrance Day ceremony recognizing the contributions of locals.

The 22nd Battery was based in the small community and hundreds of local men, from both the Siksika Nation and Gleichen, served in the First World War and Second World War.

“Siksika Nation is such a proud nation,” said Dyan Breaker, a Siksika member. “We honour people that protect our nation and that sacrifice their lives. We never forget them.”

Gleichen’s population is roughly 700 and nearly half of the town participated in Friday’s ceremony.

While the field battery has ceased to exist, the Siksika cadets carry on the military tradition in the region.
