A southeast business has been destroyed by an early morning fire.

At approximately 3:00 a.m., fire crews responded to Folk Automotive Ltd. in the 4200 block of 16A Street Southeast.

“When (crews) arrived, the building was fully engulfed in flames so they called a second alarm right away,” said CFD Batallion Chief Geoff Thornley.

CFD members extinguished the blaze before it spread to neighbouring businesses but, despite the efforts of firefighters, the fire claimed the Folk Automotive Ltd. building.

Fire officials suspect the automotive repair shop contained hazardous materials that will require additional remediation. “There will probably be some environmental issues with vehicles involved.”

To ensure dangerous fluids did not enter Calgary's waterways, fire crews placed booms in the Bow River nearby.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
