The Calgary Police Service is investigating the recent theft of a donation box for veterans from a fast food restaurant in the community of Lakeview.

Shortly after 4:00 p.m., officers were called to the Dairy Queen in the 6400 block of Crowchild Trail Southwest after the owner/manager noticed the poppy box had been removed.

“There was a couple of guys near the counter, they both bought something,” recalled Doug Porter, the store’s owner. “I was just going to check the poppy box because it is Remembrance Day and the money bucket was gone.”

Porter says the likely suspect was a man, probably in his 50s, with salt-and-pepper hair, a beard and blue eyes. The restaurant’s surveillance camera was not operating at the time of the theft.

The restaurant’s owner is outraged by the thief’s lack of respect for veterans.

“Both my parents were in the service during the war in the Air Force,” explained Porter. “Any words that I would use to describe this individual could not be used on public broadcast.”

Anyone with information about the donation box theft is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service at 403-266-1234.
