A retired Calgary police officer accused of molesting a young girl over twenty years ago was in a Calgary courtroom for the first day of his trial on Tuesday.

Stephen Huggett was charged in August 2013 with invitation to sexual touching with a child under 14 years and sexual interference with a child under 14 years.

The charges stem from incidents that are alleged to have happened in the early 1990s, involving inappropriate sexual behaviour and touching.

The victim, now 29, was just seven when the offences allegedly took place and police say she was introduced to the accused through her mother who was an acquaintance.

The woman took the stand on Tuesday and told the court that she stayed at Huggett’s house frequently and that he showered with her a number of times.

She also said that “sometimes he would lie naked and I would do somersaults on top of him.”

The woman, who can’t be identified, also alleged that he gave her wine and rubbed her inner thighs on one occasion. She said she was scared to come forward and talk about what was happening to her.

Huggett spent nine months in jail in 2009 for possession of child pornography.

He retired from the Calgary Police Service in 2007 after 25 years with the force.

Huggett pleaded not guilty to the charges and the defence has not said whether he will take the stand.

The trial continues on Wednesday.
