Search and rescue members are combing a section of B.C.'s East Kootenay after an 18-year-old and a 21-year-old left their campsite Saturday afternoon and didn’t return.

The men were camping near White Tail Lake when they informed their fellow campers they were planning to go into town to pick up some dirt bikes, a distance of approximately 25 kilometres.

The two men were last seen at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, leaving the campsite in a pickup truck.

The vehicle is described as:

  • Chevrolet pickup truck
  • Cherry red
  • Mag tires
  • Low profile
  • Regular cab
  • Alberta plates

The region contains numerous dirt roads. Twenty search and rescue volunteers are pulling over every vehicle that passes, and showing pictures of the missing pick up truck.

The terrain in the area between White Tail Lake and Canal Flats is increasing the difficulty of the search effort.

“It's hard.  The area is quite large, incredible terrain, and a deep river,” says Wendy Hetherington, search coordinator.  “Air search and rescue is out, Invermere search and rescue, and Kimberley search and rescue, and Cranbrook search and rescue, are out combing the roads and looking for any clues.”

The identities of the men have not been released but officials confirm one man is local while the other is from Alberta.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the missing men or the pickup truck is asked to call 9-1-1.
