A ten year veteran of the Calgary fire department is facing charges, including manslaughter, in connection with the death of a soldier during a training exercise.

Corporal Joshua Baker, 24, from Edmonton, was killed on Feb. 12, 2010, and four other soldiers were injured during a training exercise in Kandahar.

Major Darryl Watts, the officer in charge at the time and Warrant Officer Paul Ravensdale was in charge of safety at the range.

A longtime reservist, Watts was on military leave from his job in Calgary at the time.

The fire department said Watts promptly informed his superiors of the charges and he remains on active duty. "As far as CFD is concerned, his performance has been exemplary," said acting Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc.

Ravensdale also faces charges in the death.

Watts and Ravensdale were also charged with negligent performance of a military duty and four counts of unlawfully causing bodily harm.

"It is alleged that the proper safety procedures were not followed during the training exercise," the news release reads. "The case will now proceed through the military justice system."
