A vigil is taking place on Tuesday evening to remember the five young people who were murdered during a house party celebrating the last day of classes almost a year ago.
Wednesday marks the one year anniversary of the tragedy and Calgarians are invited to a candlelight vigil outside the home at 11 Butler Crescent NW, at 9:00 p.m.
Two women who live in the Brentwood area organized the event to honour Josh Hunter, Zackariah Rathwell, Jordan Segura, Kaiti Perras and Lawrence Hong.
The five were stabbed to death at a party that was held to celebrate Bermuda Shorts Day on April 15, 2014.
Matthew de Grood is charged with five counts of first-degree murder in their deaths.
De Grood’s trial is expected to get underway at the end of May.
A memorial still sits outside the home where the five were murdered and it is expected to grow again over the next few days.
Community members hope people will come together on Tuesday night to reflect and remember the five.
“The one year is really hard because it’s remembering a time when five great people died,” said Kyle Tenove, friend of the victims. “For the public, I think the most important thing is to remember the things they did when there were alive and the good that came after they passed away.”
The University of Calgary is holding a private ceremony for students on campus on Wednesday and it is also hosting the first U-Calgary Strong Festival following the ceremony to promote student well-being.
Students from Mount Royal University and ACAD are also invited to the event.
