Police have charged a 24-year-old woman with manslaughter and failing to provide the necessities of life in connection with the death of a 19-month-old toddler in Medicine Hat last week.

Police say the child was assaulted in a day home and was airlifted to Calgary with critical head injuries last Monday.

Teh child died in Alberta Children's Hospital two days later.

The woman facing charges was originally charged with aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessities of life.

The accused is in custody and has not been named by police.

She is set to appear in a Medicine Hat court on Tuesday.

The family of teh child has set up a trust fund to help cover the costs of the burial.
