Once again, the City of Calgary and many other organizations are opening their doors as part of Doors Open YYC, an annual event that allows residents a ‘behind the scenes’ look at many facilities.

Officials say the event, which runs September 27 and 28, offers visitors a unique and interactive way to see the city functions that they wouldn’t normally have access to.

Over 30 sites city-wide are participating in this year’s event, with 12 of those associated with the City of Calgary.

One of the highlights this year will be the Shepard Landfill, which is still filled to the brim with damaged branches and other waste material from the surprise snowstorm in early September.

“Visitors to Shepard Landfill will see firsthand the magnitude of the damage to our urban forest. It’s a steadily growing mountain of tree branches and debris,” says Blair Riddle with Waste & Recycling Services in a release. “We have already received enough debris at all the three landfills to cover the playing field at McMahon Stadium to a height of three metres. Fortunately, all of those tree branches will be mulched for future use and kept out of the landfill.”

The tours are free of charge and run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Interested parties should know that some of the sites require pre-registration.
