The grandparents of a five-year-old boy who died from blunt force trauma last year made a brief court appearance on Monday.

Allan Edgardo Perdomo Lopez and Carolina Del Carmen Perdomo are charged with manslaughter in connection to the death of Eneas Emilio Perdomo on July 10, 2015.

The five-year-old boy died in Alberta Children’s Hospital and an autopsy determined that his death was caused by blunt force trauma to the head.

Police say that Allan Perdomo is the boy’s biological grandfather and that Emilio was sent to Canada from Mexico by his mother so he could have a better life.

On Monday, the Perdomos appeared before a judge and the matter was put over until Thursday to give their lawyers a chance to review the file.

The couple is in police custody and the defence says it will be asking the court to release them on Thursday if the Crown can’t present evidence to show why they should be detained.

"Our primary concern is, these are still allegations at this point and people are presumed innocent until proven guilty, while we’ve been provided nothing to say why they should be held on any kind of grounds, so we would basically like the Crown to make their case as soon as possible on why they want our clients detained and if not, we’d like them to be released as soon as possible so we can begin to deal with these charges, " said Allan’s lawyer, Darren Mahoney.

Emilio had been in Calgary for just six months before he died.
