A man who was found dead inside a northeast Calgary apartment building on the weekend has been identified and police are ruling his death a homicide.

Police were called to Valley Side Apartments at 322 1 Avenue N.E. at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday for a check on welfare and discovered the body of a man.

The man has been identified as Frank Dwayne Blomme, 55, of Calgary and police say he was found inside one of the units suffering from a gunshot wound and died at the scene.

Carol Murray is the building manager and told CTV that she didn’t hear anything from the unit where Blomme lived, but said there was a commotion in the main lobby of the building.

“Just a bunch of people yelling and screaming; I told them to shut the hell up and then it tried to go back to sleep, but there were lights in my window. It was the police flashlights, someone called 911 I guess.”

Others who live in the building say police have been there before and that Blomme was shot by a group of three assailants. "Three guys came in and shot him with a shotgun. Didn't rob him; just shot him with a shotgun and left."

Police believe there were a number of people in the apartment when the shooting happened and  are asking anyone with information to come forward.

An autopsy is currently being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The Homicide Unit is investigating and anyone with information is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234, or anonymous tips may be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
