Two men, including an off-duty member of the Calgary Police Service, suffered serious injuries in an early morning head-on collision on the QEII highway between Calgary and Airdrie.
EMS spokesperson Adam Loria says paramedics responded to the northbound lanes of the QEII near the Highway 566 overpass shortly after 1:00 a.m. following reports of a collision involving two vehicles.
RCMP say a Ford Taurus was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway when it collided with an oncoming Jeep Wrangler.
The driver of the Taurus was trapped in the wreckage and fire crews had to remove the man from the vehicle. The 31-year-old man was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre with serious, potentially life threatening injuries and he remains in hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the Wrangler suffered serious, soft tissue injuries but his condition in considered stable and his injuries non-life threatening.
The Calgary Police Service confirms an off-duty CPS member was injured in the crash.
RCMP closed the northbound lanes of the Highway between the Highway 566 and Yankee Valley Boulevard for several hours following the collision.
RCMP members have launched an investigation into the collision.
