This is the second shooting this week involving Calgary police

A man was taken to hospital in serious condition after a shooting downtown Saturday morning.

It happened in an alley near Centre Street and 7th Avenue just before 11 a.m. Saturday.

An Anti-racism rally was being held a few blocks away at City Hall when the shooting started.

Ryan Welicome, who was taking pictures at the rally, says the man he believes was shot walked by City Hall shouting “white power.”

“The guy just kinda walked by. He was casual then he started yelling out white power and he spat on the ground and whatnot,” said Welicome.

Sherry Walford, was also at the rally says she say police go after the man.

“I saw a crowd gather and this guy walks by and yells out white power and starts swearing at these guys and fingering them. The next thing I know there were cops getting out of a van and start to walk towards him. He starts running and they took off after him, “ said Walford.

Jalal Ladak says he heard the gunshots from the alley.

“He was lying on the ground in about 15 to 20 seconds, the officers came to his body,” said Ladak.

The man was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Monday an officer with Calgary police shot and killed 27 year old Anthony Heffernan at a hotel on Barlow Trail.

ASIRT is investigating both incidents, which is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting.
