A 45-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection to the death of a woman at a southeast area home back in January.

Police were called to a home in the 200 block of Cramond Close S.E. at about 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 24 for a check on welfare.

Officers forced their way into the home after no one answered the door and found the woman’s body.

“We believe she was killed inside the residence. We believe she died sometime between Friday evening, when her ex-husband picked up their son, and then Saturday evening when he again attended the residence to drop the son off,” said CPS S/Sgt. Doug Andrus. “The ex-husband tried to contact her on Saturday afternoon and when he was unable to, he contacted the Calgary Police Service.”

The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Cindy Enger of Calgary and police have declared her death a homicide.

A man was taken into custody on Friday and search warrants were executed in the Airdrie and Carstairs area in relation to the case.

“We did recover a weapon. We have to conduct forensics and ballistics before we can determine if it’s associated to our investigation,” said Andrus.

Joseph D’Arcy Schluter,  45, of Carstairs, is now charged with one count of first-degree murder and is expected to appear in court on Monday.

“He contacted us as a result of our appeal for people who had contact with the victim or knew the victim. Based on that contact we continued with our investigation and led us to the first-degree murder charges,” said Andrus.

Police say the accused and victim were known to each other and that Enger’s death was not random.

Investigators are not releasing the motive or cause of death at this time and say they are not seeking any other suspects.

Police are asking anyone who may have been in contact with Enger, in the two months leading up to her death, to contact them if they have not already done so.
