The Calgary Flames have announced the signing of restricted free agent forward Sean Monahan to a seven year contract extension

The deal is worth $44 million, an average of $6.3 million per year.

The 21-year-old, who is entering his fourth season with the team, tallied 27 goals and 36 assists in 2015/2016.

“This is a young player that has established himself as an important player in this league,” said Flames general manager Brad Treliving. “We look at this as securing Sean for the prime years of his career.”

Monahan says he is committed to winning as a member of the Flames.

“I wanted to be here and we both wanted to make it happen,” said Monahan.

With Monahan in the fold, Treliving says a priority is signing Monahan’s linemate Johnny Gaudreau."We're continuing to work at it."
