Fire crews are still at the scene of a blaze that destroyed a high-end home that was under construction in Bearspaw.

The fire broke out at the home west of the city just before 7 a.m. Friday.

Fire crews from Calgary, Springbank, and Rocky View all responded to the scene near 12 Mile Coulee Road on the city's northwest edge.

Crews say that no one was inside the home at the time of the fire.

Harry Helwarda, a neighbour in the community says he was getting ready to go to work when he noticed the fire.

"I opened up my garage door to get my car out and all this black thick smoke was going past. I heard sirens earlier in the morning but didn't think anything of it," said Helwarda.

The homeowner and builder could do nothing but watch the fire claim the home as firefighters worked to protect neighbouring homes from the blaze and bring the fire under control.

Judy Unsworth, with the Rocky View Country Fire Department, says they kept other homes safe in two ways. "They kept the neighbouring homes pressurized so it makes it difficult for flame to impinge on it and they kept water on those homes as well."

It took over an hour to bring the fire under control, but when the flames were finally put out, there wasn't much left.

Construction on the luxury home was almost complete and it was about two to three weeks from being finished.

The home will have to be completely rebuilt and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
