A Calgary man, who was left a quadriplegic after he was shot by police in 2013, is now suing the force for $7.5M.

Matthew Brown was shot by police in November 2013 when he was trying to flee from officers who approached his truck that had been parked on a residential street.

Brown, 22, had been sleeping in his truck prior to the incident. His family said he had a sleeping disorder that sometimes required him to pull over quickly.

During the incident, Brown attempted to flee officers, driving his truck directly at one of them, prompting the officer to open fire.

The bullet hit Brown in the neck, leaving him a quadriplegic requiring full-time care and a breathing tube.

The lawsuit claims negligence on the part of the police and questions the legality of stopping him in the first place.

Brown has previously served a five-year sentence for four counts of armed robbery with a firearm. He’d been released six months before he was shot.

The CPS are in the process of responding to the lawsuit.
