A 19-year-old boy is dead after the car his family was travelling in was struck early Sunday morning at the intersection of Country Hills Boulevard and Metis Trail Northeast.
Emergency crews responded to the intersection at approximately 12:30 a.m. following a crash involving a Dodge Journey and a Kia Forte
According to police, the eastbound Forte, driven by a 43-year-old man, entered the intersection when it was struck on the passenger side by the northbound Journey. Investigators believe the driver of the Journey, a 28-year-old woman, failed to stop at a red light.
The passenger in the front seat of the Forte, a teenage boy, was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not been released.
"The other two passengers and the driver were all taken to the Foothills Hospital in serious, potentially life threatening condition," said Acting Sgt. Trevor Cairns of the CPS Traffic Unit.
Police confirm the occupants of the Forte were a husband and wife and the couple's two children. As of early Sunday afternoon, the three remain in hospital and the father's condition is considered life threatening. Members of the CPS Traffic Unit cannot confirm the current status of the mother and daughter.
The unnamed driver of the Journey was arrested at the scene but has been released from police custody. Charges are pending against the woman.
Investigators suspect speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The investigation into the fatal collision continues.
Anyone with information pertaining to the crash is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service Traffic Unit, 403-567-4000, or anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers.
