Residents in northeast Calgary who say they’ve never been bothered by airplanes over their homes before say they are getting increasingly frustrated with constant noise from aircraft.

Planes coming into Calgary International Airport have now been taking a different route to land at the new runway that opened just last month.

That means that planes themselves have been taking a different flight path to land there, causing a lot more air traffic over areas that previously saw few flights.

City officials say they are now looking at the possibility of creating a noise bylaw that would impose restrictions on early morning or late night usage of the new runway.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says he wants to work with the Calgary Airport Authority to look at any other way to reduce noise.

“Those folks who are saying ‘you chose to live near the airport, you’re good’, Marlborough isn’t really that close to the airport and if this is something that is brand new, it’s something we have to discuss. I’m hopeful that the Airport Authority and Nav Canada and us can discuss a solution that doesn’t impede the airport but also allows people to enjoy their backyards.”

The new runway is the largest in Canada.
