A suspected impaired driver was arrested early Sunday morning after two stationary vehicles, including a marked Calgary Police Service unit, were struck during a traffic stop along Crowchild Trail Northwest.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m., the officer stopped a vehicle along westbound Crowchild Trail near Sarcee Trail after witnessing an infraction.

“The police vehicle, as well as the vehicle that had been stopped, were on the right median over the fog line,” said Acting CPS Sgt. Kirk Moore. ‘The police car with its emergency lights activated and the vehicle that had stopped were on the right side of the roadway on Crowchild Trail when another westbound vehicle rear-ended them square, moving both of the vehicles further west up the roadway and injuring the police officer inside.”

The nature of the officer’s injuries has not been confirmed but Moore says the CPS member was transported to hospital for assessment.

The driver of the third vehicle, who has not been named, was arrested at the scene. “The Calgary Police Service has somebody in custody and we’re investigating speed and alcohol as factors in this collision.”

Moore says the crash is a stark reminder of the dangers emergency workers face along roadways and reminds driver’s to slow down in the adjacent lane when passing a stopped emergency vehicle.
