Former Justice Minister Jonathan Denis is accused of domestic abuse and some are calling for him to resign as a PC candidate on the eve of the election.

A publication ban was lifted on Monday on Denis’ court proceeding and allegations of abuse from his estranged wife were revealed.

The Wildrose says he should pull out of the race and released a statement saying…

Today, Wildrose called for PC Calgary-Acadia candidate Jonathan Denis to resign as a candidate after the publication ban was lifted from his court trial.

Given the serious allegations raised from today’s court proceedings, Mr. Denis should step back from running for public office.

Considering the standard put forward by Jim Prentice as PC leader to bar candidates with prior emergency protective orders, keeping Mr. Denis as a representative shows questionable judgement.

Even if only half these allegations are proven to be true, it is only proper for Mr. Prentice to ask for his candidate’s resignation immediately.

Jim Prentice says he was made aware of Denis’ marital issues three weeks ago and that when he learned of the protection order last weekend he asked Denis to step down as Justice Minister.

“I’m glad that it’s finished in court and I wish them the best,” said Prentice. “Anytime there’s a marital breakdown it’s a sad state of affairs but the judge has dealt with all of that this morning, I don’t have anything to add.”

Denis is not charged with anything and will continue to run as a candidate in Calgary-Acadia.
