Police have charged a 29-year-old Calgary man with first-degree murder in connection to the death of his mother at a northwest home on Monday afternoon.

Police were called for a check on welfare at a house on Ranchridge Dr. N.W. at about 1:20 p.m. and found the body of a woman inside.

Andrew Douglas Murray, 29, is now facing a first-degree murder charge in connection to the death of his mother.

According to police, Andrew Murray had moved back into the home less than a week ago and it was Andrew who called 911 after shooting his mother.

CTV News spoke to the woman's employer who identified the victim as Lois Aileen Murray, a grief counsellor at McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes.

A Monday morning autopsy confirmed Lois Murray died as a result of a gunshot wound.

Neighbours are shaken by the incident and say the area is a quite neighbourhood.

“I remember them from trick-or-treating and that kind of thing but they never really talked to anyone, they were really unassuming,” said Jessica Graves.

Sarah Crow, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 20 years, is shocked by the incident. “When I came out, there were police cars out on the street in front of our house. When the police officers came out, they were each carrying a shotgun, one carrying his sidearm, running up the street. It wasn’t long after that that more cars arrived. We went back in the house – we thought there was too much activity. When the last car arrived and an ambulance arrived, that’s when we thought it was safe to come out. That’s when we saw someone apprehended.

According to the Calgary Police Service, Lois Murray's death is Calgary's 18th homicide of 2013.
