Three people have been left homeless after a fire tore through their home in Chestermere, east of Calgary.

At about 1:30 a.m., firefighters with the Chestermere Fire Department were called to a townhouse complex in the southwest section of the community.

When they arrived at the scene, the home on Rainbow Falls Green was engulfed in flames.

Neighbours say a father and his two young daughters were able to escape the blaze safely.

An adjacent home was also damaged in the fire, but officials say it could have been much worse.

"These properties are designed with a fire break in the middle; a firewall which did its job," says Deputy Chief Richard Millar with the Chestermere Fire Service. "There was a little bit of water damage, but that was from the water being put on the affected property."

Millar says there were no injuries and everyone got out safely.

There is no timeline on when they will be able to return and no damage estimate.

The homeowners were able to salvage a few items and documents, but that's about it.

Officials remain at the scene to determine a cause.
