RCMP have released the identity of the 54-year-old man who perished in an October 9 fire at the Bashaw Motor Inn in Bashaw, Alberta.

An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the deceased as Barinder Singh Tiwana, the owner of the motel.

Tiwana resided at the motel alongside his wife and two sons. The surviving members of the family suffered serious injuries in the blaze.

According to RCMP, racist graffiti was located on the property but investigators have not determined if the vandalism and fire are related.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe page has raised in excess of $17,000 for the Tiwana family.

The town of Bashaw is located approximately 75 kilometres northeast of Red Deer.
