Authorities have imposed a fine on a woman in connection with a series of privacy breaches that took place while she was employed at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

In April 2014, it was discovered that Judy Anderson was accessing health information of adults who shared her last name as well as adults who had no connection to the program in which she worked.

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner, that conducted the investigation, found the violations took place between November 7, 2013 and March 31, 2014.

Charges were laid in November 2015 and the judge issued a $5,000 fine under the Health Information Act on September 21.

Officials say this was the fifth conviction under the HIA since its inception in 2001.

There are two other matters before the courts concerning individuals charged for improperly accessing information in contravention of the HIA.
