Caia Morstad is an outside hitter for the SAIT Trojans Women's Volleyball team.

She has been a major threat since joining the team in September.

After finishing high school in her native Swift Current, Morstad won a scholarship to play NCAA Division I volleyball with the Middle Tennessee State University Blue Riders.

"Leaving home at 17 and going to a new country and a new everything. I would do it again for sure," said Morstad, "It was pretty neat. It was a great experience for sure."

After earning a degree in Agriculture Economics from the University of Saskatchewan, the 29-year-old enrolled in SAIT's Petroleum Engineering Technology program.

"It's actually a lot easier coming back as a mature student, like, obviously I'm here for one reason and that's schooling. There's probably less distraction and I'm a little more focused on schooling as opposed to just going to school and not really knowing what the end result will be," said Morstad.

The former 2007 Stampede Princess is also an accomplished jewellry designer.

"Everything's sterling silver. A lot of it is made out of old silverware some of it is made out of just sterling silver wire or sheet silver but it's kind of a wide variety of things."

Morstad says volleyball has taught her a lot.

"Probably time management is number one. Petroleum Engineering, I've been crazy busy schooling wise, homework, group projects, this, that, everything else. My own jewellery business and also trying to do practices, games and everything else," said Morstad.

Caia Morstad is the CTV Calgary Athlete of the Week for Friday, February 10, 2012.
