AHS board member Sheila Weatherill offered her resignation on Wednesday night following the firing of executive Allaudin Merali.

Health Minister Fred Horne says that he spoke with Weatherill on Wednesday evening who presented him with her resignation.

"In our conversation, she indicated that the reputation of the AHS, and more importantly, public confidence in our health care system was the most important thing at the present time."

Horne accepted Weatherill's resignation.

Merali was turfed by the Alberta Health Services after nearly $350,000 in questionable spending was found in documents released as a result of a FOIPP inquiry.

Many of Merali's expenses were approved by Weatherill when she was head of the Capital Health Authority.

Weatherill served as president and Chief Executive Officer of Capital Health in Edmonton until 2008 when Alberta’s Health regions were consolidated.

Horne says the next step is to await the Auditor General's report on validating the processes among senios executives and to provide further committment to make public all future expense claims.
