Airdrie RCMP are warning the public to be careful around frozen ponds and creeks, especially because the surface can be very thin and unstable given the warm winter weather.

Police say that while a frigid November froze the surface of a number of bodies of water in the community and allowed people to play and skate on the ice surfaces.

Now, warm temperatures in December have thinned those ice surfaces, even leading to open water in some areas.

Authorities say that they want to make sure no one gets hurt.

"We're all for kids getting out to enjoy the outdoors and play some hockey on the ice but, this holiday season, they may have to resort to road hockey instead. Please take the time to talk to your children about these hazards," said Constable Jarom Leafloor.

Police add that most community ponds in Airdrie are also storm water retention ponds, so the ice at the edges of those ponds is often extremely unstable.
