A skydiver is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after falling 4,000 feet near the village of Beiseker, about 70 kilometres northeast of Calgary.

The 25-year-old man was airlifted by STARS to Foothills hospital, and has a broken leg and broken jaw among other injuries.

The man is a British solider participating in Adventure Training drills aimed at keeping soldiers battle-ready.

Authorities say there was no malfunction with the skydiver’s parachute as he was descending Saturday evening shortly before 6 p.m.

The training took place at Alberta Skydivers Ltd. which operates out of the Beiseker Airport.

The company says the skydiver began to spin because he held the hand brake down for too long.

He spun out of control and hit the ground hard.
