The Calgary Board of Education is honouring former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed by joining in a vigil and lowering flags at all schools to half-staff.
The CBE says that Lougheed contributed a lot to education in the province, saying he was a great believer and supporter of public education.
Pat Cochrane, chair of the CBE Board of Trustees, says that residents continue to benefit from Lougheed’s work. “We’re proud to claim him as one of our alumni.”
Lougheed was a graduate of the former Central High School and while he was there, he founded the first Students Union.
That school is now part of the CBE’s Education Centre, its administrative headquarters, and is now known as the Safran Centre.
"On behalf of the Calgary Board of Education, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the Lougheed family," says Naomi Johnson, chief superintendent of schools. "We have lost one of the great leaders of our time—they have lost a husband, father and grandfather and my thoughts are with them during this difficult time."
