The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a police involved shooting along Deerfoot Trail which claimed one life and sent one other person to hospital in critical condition.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. Friday, police responded to the southeast community of Copperfield following reports of gun shots.

When officers arrived at the scene on Copperfield Blvd. S.E., they were notified of the presence of a suspicious vehicle in the neighbourhood.

Police located the suspect vehicle, a Ford F350 pickup truck. After a brief pursuit, including the HAWCS helicopter, the vehicle came to a stop on Deerfoot Trail near the Mackenzie Lake Blvd. overpass.

Officers approached the vehicle and, following an undisclosed incident, a CPS member discharged their service firearm.

One of the occupants of the suspect vehicle, an unidentified adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Foothills Medical Centre in critical condition.

No police officers were injured in the incident.

Southbound Deerfoot Trail was closed south of 130 Ave. S.E. to facilitate ASIRT’s investigation of the shooting scene. Deerfoot Trail reopened at approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

“ASIRT is on scene, the Forensics Crime Scene Unit is also out on scene, and the Traffic Hit & Run unit is also investigating, “said CPS Staff Sergeant Paul Wyatt.

"We take every incident like this incredibly seriously, high speed instances on the Deerfoot, at any time of the day, is incredibly hazardous,” said Staff Sgt. Whyatt. “We take it gravely seriously. We don't want officers, the public or anyone else to be at risk"

According to Staff Sergeant Wyatt, the CPS members involved in the Deerfoot Trail incident have provided statements to ASIRT.
