Testimony has begun in the trial of a Calgary mother accused of killing two of her newborn children and attempting to kill a third.
A Calgary police officer, one of the first on scene when the third child was found in 2010, says that there was pretty good reason to suspect that Meredith Borowiec was the mother.
When the officer was assessing the situation, he noticed a woman, who turned out to be Borowiec, sitting on a nearby step observing the situation.
He went over to question her and noticed she had blood on a blanket that was wrapped around her and a hoodie she was wearing.
After inquiring, she told him that she was having some menstrual issues that had been ongoing since she had a miscarriage.
The officer’s testimony points to an inaccuracy in the woman’s story.
Initial reports of the incident said that Borowiec had no idea she was pregnant and that when she gave birth, she panicked and put the baby in the dumpster.
The officer said that that was enough evidence to link her to the baby and asked paramedics to look at her.
While they were examining her, the officer testified that she told them she was sorry for what she’d done.
At that point, Borowiec was charged with child endangerment and sparked a lengthy investigation leading to more charges.
Borowiec is charged with second degree murder in the deaths of two babies from 2008 and 2009.
The child was found by a man who turned out to be the father of the child.
He and other passerby jumped into the bin and found the child inside a garbage bag.
The father had no idea Borowiec, his girlfriend, was pregnant.
The baby has recovered and is healthy. Borowiec was charged with attempted murder in connection with the 2010 incident.
An investigation into the incident turned up evidence of Borowiec’s two other pregnancies including the tragic results.
She has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against her.
The bodies of the babies in 2008 and 2009 have never been found.
