Motorists on Memorial Drive were greeted by an unusual sight on Sunday morning, as the Calgary Zoo welcomed five massive animatronic lizards for their new installation.
Construction crews closed the off-ramp connecting St. George’s Drive with eastbound Memorial Drive to facilitate the addition of the animatronic dinosaurs. The thunder lizards were placed in harnesses, lifted over the Calgary Zoo’s perimeter fence and set in place in the zoo’s prehistoric park.
The dinosaur section of the Calgary Zoo was closed to the public on September 8, 2014 and is scheduled to reopen once improvements are complete. The zoo’s original estimated date for the reopening of the prehistoric park was in early November.
