The Calgary Flames have named Bill Peters as Glen Gulutzan’s successor.

The Flames have been without a head coach since April 17 when the team fired Gulutzan and two assistant coaches following a disappointing 2017-2018 campaign. The Flames failed to qualify for the postseason after a regular season record of 37-35-10.

Bill Peters, a native of Three Hills, Alberta, opted out of the final year of his contract with the Carolina Hurricanes last week.  “It’s an honour and a privilege to coach in the National Hockey League and even more so to do it in your home province,”said Peters.

“This was the individual, at the time that we made the change, that I was focused upon,” said Flames GM Brad Treliving. “I was focused on Bill.” Treliving confirmed that he did not interview any other candidates for the position.

Peters says there is reason for optimism given the current Flames' roster. “I think it’s a very good team and I think it’s a team that’s setup to win and to play the modern game.”

Details regarding Peters' contract have not been confirmed.
