A lot of garbage and debris has been collected from homes and yards affected by flooding and the city has a plan for pickup and disposal.

Service in flood-affected neighbourhoods

Waste & Recycling Services trucks will continue circulating through flood-affected neighbourhoods assisting residents with collection of flood waste.

Residents can help by ensuring parked vehicles are not blocking access to their materials.

Blue Cart collection (city-wide)

Waste & Recycling Services has resumed regular blue cart collection throughout Calgary.

  • Recyclable materials must be placed loose inside the blue cart.
  • If you have extra materials, please take them to a community recycling depot or save them for the following week.
  • If you have a missing or damaged blue cart, call 311 so we can replace it. Recyclables cannot be bagged, so you need a blue cart to resume recycling collection.
  • Carts dirtied from the flood waters can be washed with water and then should be sanitized according to Alberta Health Services instructions.

Black Cart collection (city-wide)

Garbage pick-up will continue on your regular collection day at your regular location (front street or back lane).

  • Residents who have missing or damaged black carts in flood affected areas should contact 311 so we can replace them.
  • Until your cart has been repaired or replaced, you can use garbage bags (maximum weight of 20 kg per bag).
  • Carts dirtied from the flood waters can be washed with water and then should be sanitized according to Alberta Health Services instructions.

City landfills

All City of Calgary landfills, with the exception of Shepard Landfill, have resumed normal operating hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. Shepard continues to be open until 9 p.m. until further notice. The City will continue to waive landfill fees for flood-related waste until further notice.

Please note: Citizens may experience delays at the East Calgary landfill as it is undergoing construction at this time.

Collecting household hazardous waste and appliances in flood affected areas

Chemical and other collection trucks are now driving through flood affected areas to collect household hazardous waste, large items and appliances.

You should leave these items in front of your house. Do not take them to the community garbage collection sites, and do not put them in the back lanes. If there are any items on your lawn that you do not want collected, mark them with a sign.

Chemical trucks will be collecting:

  • Household hazardous waste like propane tanks, chemicals and paints. Please keep these items separate from other garbage.

Other trucks will be collecting:

  • Appliances including fridges, stoves, washing machines and dishwashers. Please remove or secure refrigerator or freezer doors before leaving them out.
  • Mattresses, couches, and other large items.

You can also take these materials at no charge to the Throw'N' Go areas of the three City landfills

Community garbage resources

Garbage trucks also continue servicing dumpsters that were temporarily located in these communities for flood materials until further notice. Residents can bring garbage and flood damaged materials to these sites.

As a reminder, certain material should not go to these sites. These include:

Large items:

Residents of flooded communities can leave large items on their front lawns for collection. Please mark items with a sign if you do not want them collected. There will be no waste collection from rear lanes in these areas.

Electronics and appliances:

These will not be accepted in the garbage, but will be collected later from flood affected areas. More details on those arrangements will follow.

In the meantime, these materials can be taken at no charge to the Throw 'N' Go areas of City landfills for proper disposal.

Refrigerators and freezers that are left outside should have the doors secured or removed for safety. These will be collected separately from other waste.
