The RCMP investigation into Friday morning’s vehicle fire northeast of the city of Airdrie has been handed over to the Major Crimes unit after human remains were located inside the burning car.

At approximately 7:00 a.m., firefighters from Crossfield and Rocky View County responded to reports of a vehicle fire at a rural location approximately seven kilometres northeast of Airdrie, near the intersection of Township Road 280 and Range Road 283.

Crews located a body inside the vehicle and RCMP units were deployed to the scene.

Investigators have deemed the victim’s death a homicide.

The cause of the fire has not been released.

An autopsy will be conducted early next week to determine the identity of the deceased.
