In the wake of a nation-wide beef recall, independent butchers say they are getting a lot of new business from customers worried about the safety of their meat.

Second-To-None Meats says sales of its naturally grown Alberta beef are up because consumers are looking for a different source of meat after a recall because an E. coli outbreak at a nationally recognized meat packing company.

The shop in Calgary gets its beef from a small producer, not associated with XL Foods.

Shane Eustace, a butcher in the shop, says that it hasn’t just been the meat recall that has spurred people to make the switch.

“The past two days, I’ve been reading in the newspaper about this whole E. coli scare and it definitely puts a scare into me that business numbers will drop. Maybe people will hit up the sushi instead.”

The beef recall was first issued last week when E. coli was found in ground beef produced by XL Foods.

The recall soon reached nation-wide proportions when it was learned that the company ships meat products all over the country.
