The man accused of abusing a dog and a cat and leaving their bodies in an alley with their mouths taped shut pleaded guilty to two charges of animal cruelty on Friday.

Last January, a Siberian husky was found starved to death with its muzzle wrapped in tape in an alley in the city’s southeast.

A few days later a cat was found in the same area in a similar condition and vets determined that it died of asphyxia and strangulation.

The Humane Society launched an investigation and along with Calgary police issued a search warrant on a Bonavista area home a few weeks later.

Nicolino Ivano Camardi, 19, was arrested on May 3rd and charged with two counts of wilfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal.

Investigators say the animals were sourced from kijiji and were obtained about three months before they were found dead.

A bail application was denied and Camardi was placed in police custody.

On Friday, he pleaded guilty to two charges related to animal cruelty.

The Crown in the case is asking for a pre-sentence report and a psychiatric review because of the severity of the crimes but Camardi’s lawyer says his client has been behind bars long enough.

He will be sentenced at a later date.
