Calgary police say that charges could be laid in connection with a serious crash involving a motorcycle that sent one man to hospital on Thursday night.

At just before 7 p.m., police were called to the scene of a crash on Charleswood Drive above Crowchild Trail N.W.

A Toyota Corolla was making a left hand turn when a motorcyclist crossed the intersection on a yellow light, hitting the car.

Sergeant Joerg Gottschling with the CPS Traffic Section says that the drivers had no time to react.

"Witnesses tell us that the light turned amber and as the occupants of the Corolla proceeded, they did not anticipate the motorcycle coming at such a high rate of speed."

The force of the crash was so severe that it was thrown onto its side.

The motorcyclist, a man in his 20s, was thrown from the bike.

The occupants of the car sustained only minor injuries, but Gottschling says the motorcyclist sustained heavy injuries.

"The motorcycle rider sustained a broken femur, which was orginally deemed life-threatening, but staff at the Foothills Hospital has since told us that he is going to survive. He's got a severely injured leg and a punctured lung."

Police say charges are pending against the motorcyclist.

"Clearly a charge of dangerous driving is possible," says Gottschling. "We'll have to do a bit of a work up to see exactly what his speed was. at a certain point, you cross a threshold where when you're making a left turn across someone's path that it no longer becomes the fault of the person in the intersection but the one travelling at a real high rate of speed. people just can't anticipate these kinds of speeds."

Gottschling adds that, with summer around the corner, it's likely that this won't be the only motorcycle crash they'll be called to this year.
