Barry David Brown finally faced a Calgary court accused in the murder of a woman almost twelve years ago.

Corinne Belanger, 37, was found shot to death in her northeast home on April 16, 2001.

Brown was charged in connection with her murder back in 2010.

He was a friend of Belanger’s estranged husband and was questioned at the time of the murder, but never charged.

DNA samples collected from the original crime scene were used to break the case nearly a decade later.

Belanger’s mother Lily says waiting for the trial was agony and that she plans to be there everyday no matter how painful it is.

“There is no such thing as closure. I have to tell you that, there’s no closure. Closure will be when I’m gone,” said Lily Belanger.

The Crown’s theory is that Brown killed Belanger out of loyalty to his best friend, who was her estranged husband.

The prosecution says Brown knew Belanger was planning on separating from her husband.

The trial is scheduled to last about a month.
